7 lessons I’ve learnt about self-publishing your book on Kindle

In my last post about Kindle, I’ve already described the importance of having a professional looking cover and my discovery that some photos on Flickr can be used actually be used for free to create a cover for a Kindle book. It’s been great fun self-publishing on Kindle – more fun than publishing my book through a “real” publisher was – and I’ve learnt quite a lot along the way.

Self-publising on Kindle: what I’ve learnt so far

I’ve had two books published “properly” and was hoping that my book Freedom from Loneliness would be the third. I know in theory how to get a book published. But it wasn’t to be. Althought I had a publisher lined up – we even had an editorial meeting over a long lunch in a lovely London restaurant – we couldn’t agree on what direction the first chapter was going to take so the deal was off.

Dealing with Disappointments

I’ve already written about disappointment in my last post and about my realization that letting go of expectations could mean less disappointments in my life. But disappointment can’t be banished altogether. I found this post on Bleeding Espresso really inspiring. “Acknowledging and making space for all of our feelings, including disappointments, is healthy,” says writer Michelle Fabio.

The Haven of Low Expectations

You know when someone tells you that this really brilliant film is out that you must see. You absolutely cannot miss this film. It’s life-changing. The cinematography is amazing. The story is gripping. You go to the cinema. You leave disappointed. The reason? The film was perfectly good. Your expectations were unreasonably high.

Assumptions we make about ourselves

I am seriously allergic to nuts. I know this for a fact, having experienced the mad ambulance dash to A & E followed by a couple of days in Intensive Care. I don’t want to go through that again. For the past 24 years, I’ve thought that I was allergic to oats too, having suffered the familiar itchy throat after trying flapjacks and similar biscuits. It turns out that I’m not.

A new blog and a new film on YouTube

Loneliness is something that’s affected my life. It’s made me miserable, got me into unsuitable relationships and hampered my progress in life. For example, I’ve avoided applying for promotion if it meant moving to a new city. These days, I don’t feel lonely very much, but I’ve done a lot of reading about loneliness and been startled by some of the things I’ve found out.

Five Lonely Days in London?

I’ve just come back from 5 days in London. It promised to be an exciting five days: a reception at the Houses of Parliament, a meeting about a documentary I want to make and lunch with someone I really admire and was lucky enough to work with a couple of years ago. Not to mention seeing friends and an evening at a salsa club. But, as I travelled down on the train last Saturday, I was haunted by my usual fear: loneliness.

Where does the time go?

It’s nearly two weeks since I posted on my blog – and I can’t really say where those two weeks have disappeared to. Sometimes, I seem to have weeks where I get a lot done and can look at what I’ve accomplished with a sense of pride. Then at other times, I seem to have been running frantically and going nowhere: the time has disappeared and I have nothing at all to show for it.

Why Don’t You Just Switch Off Your TV Set And Go And Do Something Less Boring Instead?

As you probably already know, I should still be on my six week silent retreat. Although I didn’t go, I decided to make some changes at home – the sorts of changes I’d have made if I had been on retreat. I haven’t been silent for six weeks but I have gone out less, gone online less and I’ve watched less TV. In fact, for the first week, I didn’t watch any! And it was great.
